Questions about Alateen meetings? Please read on...

What is Alateen? Alateen, a part of the Al-Anon Family Groups, is a fellowship of young people (mostly teenagers) whose lives have been affected by alcoholism or drug abuse in a family member or close friend, whether they are in your life or not. It is a free, peer-based, weekly meeting for young people ages 11-19. By attending Alateen, teens meet other teens in similar situations. Alateen is not a religious program and there are no fees or dues to belong.

What do I do to attend a meeting? The meetings are on a walk-in basis. Alateen, like Al‑Anon and other twelve step groups, has no membership list, and does not take attendance. You’re welcome to attend as frequently or infrequently as you choose. There is never any obligation. You can choose to share your full name or not. There are no dues for membership but our Seventh Tradition states, "Every group ought to be fully self-supporting, declining outside contributions." Contributions are voluntary, a $2 donation is suggested. Newcomers, your first meeting is on us!

What if I am not comfortable speaking at the meeting? It is your choice to speak or not during the meetings. Newcomers are welcomed to meetings, usually provided with literature and a local meeting list, and invited to listen and learn. Some meetings offer beginners’ meetings, specifically for newcomers. Members are available to answer questions before or after the meetings.

What happens at an Alateen meetingAdult Al-Anon members attend Alateen meetings to provide guidance to the Alateen members. The teen members run their own meeting, though. The secretary will open the meeting with the Serenity Prayer and a script is read providing details about Alateen and the meeting format. Literature is read, and teens share their experience in the program, talk about how their lives are affected by alcoholism, and how the tools of Alateen help them. The Al-Anon Member In Alateen Service (AMIAS) has been background checked and fingerprinted to ensure the meetings are safe for both the adults and Alateen members.
