December Share & Care

Here's the December newsletter --->  2018DecS&C
In this edition, all contributions are from Al-Anon members in Districts 6-10; I didn’t need to rely on The Forum reprints. And Patty wrote a nice thank you to those that stepped up for the members affected by the Camp Fire. Thank you, Patty.    -- Andrea,  Share & Care Editor

Thanksgiving Disaster Plan

Meeting Open on Thanksgiving—7:00-8:30 pm, 4300 Las Cruces Way, Sacramento
A member recently reminded us that we can have a Plan A and Plan B for Thanksgiving, plus a “Disaster Plan."
For example, Plan A might be that everyone shows up on time for Thanksgiving dinner and gets along and we have a great time.
Plan B might be that not everyone shows up on time nor does everyone get along with each other, but we (the Al-Anon members) still eat our pie and have a great time.
The Disaster Plan is that Thanksgiving dinner is a disaster so we go to the Courage to Change Parents Al-Anon Family Group's Thursday meeting, 7:00-8:30 pm, 4300 Las Cruces Way, Sacramento and eat pie and have a wonderful time with our fellow Al-Anon members.
We’re holding a seat for you…just in case you need to use the Disaster Plan.
Editor's note:  Some meetings may be open on Thanksgiving -- don't assume that they are all closed.  Even if a meeting is closed, a few people may show up and you can have an informal meeting at the nearby coffee shop.

Help for Wildfire Victims

As most of you already know communities in and around Paradise have been devastated by wildfires. District 3, which includes Paradise has reached out to us for donations of Al-Anon literature and pamphlets. All of their meeting locations and as well as most of their homes have burned to the ground.

If you or your group have any copies of books or pamphlets that you can donate, please work with your group rep to consolidate your donations.  The AIS Office will be the collection point from Nov 26th- Nov 28th. Later that week one of our members has volunteered to drive our donations to Chico for distribution to members affected by this horrific event. We will then continue to collect donations until Dec 15th at which point remaining donations will be driven or shipped to the affected areas.
In addition, Intergroup has decided to start helping immediately with an allocation of funds in the amount of $450 to be used for literature purchases to members in need. Any monetary donations will be made to purchase additional books, based on their needs.

The AIS Office is located at 5429 Palm Ave., Sac, CA 95841
10am- 3pm M-Th     916 334-2970
The office is closed Thanksgiving week and will start accepting donations on Nov 26th.
Please call ahead of time to verify a volunteer is here to accept donations.

Mini PA System

The A.I.S. Office has a portable "Mini-P.A. System" that can be used in Al-Anon group meetings to help "people in the back" hear the secretary and chairperson.  This unit is donated to be given to any group that needs it.  It works well for groups of up to 50 people indoors.  It runs on a 9V battery so there is no power cord to trip over, no AC outlet needed.  You just plug the speaker into the microphone and adjust the volume.  Unplugging the speaker disconnects the battery.
If interested, contact the A.I.S. Office.

Closing Prayers

Questions often come up about closing prayers at the end of group meetings.  The question has been raised at the national level several times over the years.  In 2009 it came up again and was discussed at length.  The bottom line is that this is up to each individual group to choose what to do at the end of the meeting, and the "group conscience" must be the guide.

Rejected Donations

By tradition we are self-supporting; Al-Anon cannot accept your donation through United Way, Truist, Amazon-Smile, or any such charitable channel, unless you have personally informed the Al-Anon entity ahead of time of your name and the amount to be expected.  Charitable organizations are unable to identify donors to recipients.

June 27 Folsom Meeting Cancelled

The Folsom Parents’ Serenity AFG (Wednesday evenings @ 7p) will NOT MEET on Wednesday, June 27, 2018.

The Oak Hills Church facility is not available for our use that evening.

Business Meeting Suggestion

Darby T. is the chairperson of  our Northern CA World Service Committee.  At the recent Assembly, she offered this suggestion for how to run an Al-Anon business meeting.  She comments:
"It was crafted by a committee from my Home Group, Thursday AM Step Study, after a group inventory we conducted.  The paragraph was written to set the tone for our business meetings.  While it is not CAL, it came from the ESH of the committee members and their understanding of CAL researched to find something like it.  That said, here it is:"

Notes from World Service Office

1) 2018 Membership Survey: More than 13,000 members participated in Al-Anon's twelfth study. The 2018 Survey has by far the largest number of participants since the survey began in 1984. The increase from 8,517 participants in 2015 is attributable to Area, District and Al-Anon Information Services (AISs) who informed members as well as WSO print and online publications and digital ...

Intergroup Report

Intergroup Chair Joe C. has provided the following report to be delivered to the Northern California Al-Anon ASSEMBLY which meets May 19 in Redwood City.  The Assembly is held twice a year and is a "business meeting" for all Group Reps. and District Reps. and others in service positions, from all over Northern California.

D 6-10 INTERGROUP REPORT: May 2018

Hi Everyone!

Our Al-Anon Information Services (AIS) office, which is the literature depot for Districts 6-10, is piloting opening up on one Saturday a month for members that may not be able to visit the office during the week.  We tried out the idea last weekend, May 12, and it was a great start to the idea.  We plan to open on a few more Saturdays in the coming months and monitor the interest/attendance.

Member + Member = a Group
Group + Group = a District
District + District = an Assembly
